Updated June 2009.

Quality habitat comprised of a mixture of native grasses, legumes and other broadleaf forbs, and shrubby/thicket cover is essential for abundant rabbit populations. Spring and summer weather conditions have been highly variable so far in 2009. Heavy rainfall and flooding in some parts of the state during early summer may have disrupted peak spring breeding. However, vegetation in areas receiving abundant rainfall will likely provide good cover and food resources in mid- to late-summer. Conversely, areas that have started to experience drought conditions in early-summer may have more sparse cover and food resources. Given the long reproductive season and high reproductive potential of rabbits, it is difficult to predict population levels. However, it is anticipated that rabbit numbers will still be good in areas with suitable habitat.
