Updated June 2009.

Gray squirrel populations are expected to be abundant across most of the state in areas of suitable habitat. Fox squirrels, depending on subspecies, may be locally abundant where habitat is suitable (mature hardwood forest for Delta and open forests and field interfaces for upland subspecies, respectively). The mast crop during 2008 was good across most of Mississippi following an exceptional mast crop in 2007. Squirrels should have had good reproduction during the past two years in response to abundant mast crops. Some areas that were hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina may still see lower than normal squirrel populations, but populations are rebuilding where habitat is available.
