MDWFP Camp Fish 2013:
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) is hosting Camp Fish 2013 at the Turcotte Education Center in Madison County. The camp will be held June 17-20 and is open to youth ages 11-15. The camp's goal is to provide opportunities, skills, and resources to introduce Mississippi's youth to the sport of fishing. The camp is much more than kids going fishing. Classroom discussions and hands-on exercises will be led by MDWFP fisheries biologists to help students gain a better understanding of fish, fishing, and fisheries management. Some of the topics covered during the 4-day camp will include fish identification, choosing fishing tackle and lures, casting techniques, fish aging, types of boats, and conservation techniques. Students will also have hands-on opportunities to learn about different sampling gear and methods used by MDWFP biologists to sample fish populations. Additionally, students will receive training to become certified in boating safety.
Youth ages 11-15 are encouraged to apply. Because of limited space, we can only accept 25 youth at each camp. To apply for a camp, youth are required to complete the application form HERE and return it to MDWFP Camp Fish 2013, Attention: Larry Pugh, 1505 Eastover Drive, Jackson, MS 39211. Applications will be ranked based on the quality and content of the essays to determine the 25 camp participants.
Prior fishing experience is not required to attend, however, a desire to learn about fish and fishing is needed. There is no cost to attend either camp. Camp participants will need to be onsite by 8:00 a.m. each morning and picked up by 5:00 p.m. each day. Lunch and refreshments will be provided each day. Parents/guardians are responsible for daily transportation to and from each camp. For more information about MDWFP Camp Fish 2013, contact Larry Pugh at email@example.com or 601-432-2200.
