Yeah, I looked into it myself. I called and requested the price for one of their hunts and almost choked. How much does that add up to per pound of venison meat?

You can't look at a pay hunt as cost per pound of venison because the real reason most people go on them is for the experience. It is an opportunity to hunt at a place you would not likely get to hunt otherwise. Yes, $3000 is a lot to pay for a hunt. However, you could not join a hunting club on an island in the Mississippi River for anywhere near that amount. I know a couple of guys who have bow hunted at Giles Island. While neither one killed a buck, they both saw huge ones. They were both satisfied because of the opportunity and memories, not anything physical they brought home.

I realize what you are saying Dwayne. A hunt like this is a once in a lifetime expererience. However, if I were to join a club for that amount of money, I would be able to hunt it more than three days. Also I would have the potential to grow bucks in the same class as the ones they have on Giles Island provided it was put under a trophy management program for a few years and the inferior deer culled. I am not knocking it at all, wish I could afford to go myself. I personally would rather spend the money on an elk hunt in New Mexico, where the success rate is high for a potential P&y or B&C record class animal.

I checked into an advertisement for a club on the Mississippi River this year, just for laughs. Each membership was allowed one buck and three does. The cost was $150K plus around $5K/year thereafter. The members were all part owners. They do it that way so that someone won't come along after they have done all the work and lease it out from under them. The beauty of a paid hunt is you know all the costs up front. I want to go to Montana or Wyoming myself. I'm saving up for it.
I agree that the price of a paid hunt is steep and they're not for everybody. But have you been on a vacation at the beaches in Florida lately? Talk about steep, and all you have to show for it is a sunburn and sand in your britches.

LOL I hear you on that Dwayne. You are right about the summer vacations in Florida. Good luck to you when you go out west. That is one of my lifelong dreams. to go out west and tag a big respectable elk with my bow. I would settle for one taken with a gun, but it wouldn't be near the thrill. Packing into the high country on horseback, sleeping and eating in a big wall tent. Man that has goto be an experience of a lifetime! "Make that first shot count!"

It has become an annual thing for my dad to take myself along with my brother on a pay hunt each year. We have been to many different places accross the United States, and still the most fun place we have been to is here in Mississippi. It is in Port Gibson,MS. It is privately owned by one man. He has i believe about 12,000 acres. We went there last year and i shot a nice 9 point with my bow. O, and by the way, it is bowhunting only. Neither my brother or my dad shot a buck that trip but they both loved it. Everyone that was with us that year had a shot at a mature deer. The cost for this place is $1800. This is a little steep, but it is a 5 night trip, you get 4 full days of hunting. They provide all the food (which is all excellent wildlife meat since the owner is a serious hunter). They also give each guest there own room with a king size bed and a hot tub. It is a great experiance that i would definately recommend to anyone that would like to go on a great pay hunt here in MS.

My dream hunt is in the Milk River Valley in Montana. Of course the trips gonna cost about 6000. I will graduate from the University of Southern Mississippi next december and have already begun to save for the trip. Plan is to leave the day after graduation with two buddies and my dad. It's going to be the trip of a lifetime for sure.

TommyBBH70, You can go for a lot less than $6000, especially if you want to bowhunt. Gun hunts are $750 to $1000 more and a day or two shorter. Check with Shirley Woods at www.bookingnwguides.com. She found a 6 day bowhunt for me on the Milk River for $2000. The other expenses are traveling and the license. Total cost is around $3500. One thing I wasn't aware of is that they only hunt in the afternoons along the Milk River because the deer are in the fields in the morning and there is really no way to sneak in undetected. I commend you and your buddies for setting a goal and working towards it. Good luck to you. Oh, don't forget that you have to apply for tags right after the first of the year, and you will have to book your hunt a year in advance if you hunt with a reputable outfitter.

Hey dwanye thanks for the info. I personally would rather go on a bow hunt but the others that I plan on going with are not bow hunters. We are going to apply for tags in January and hopefully we will get the chance to go.

All types of hunting is getting to be a "rich man's" sport!

There is a reason it's called fishin'and huntin' instead of catchin' and killin'
