Does installing gates on road and trails from main roads really deter tresspassers? I don't have any gates right now, but I do know someone is tresspassing. While working on my camp last week, they pulled up and hurried up and backed out before I could get their liscense number. Don't know what they are doing but scared they will damage my camp. Looked like he had a couple of kennels in the back of the truck, so maybe he's just using it to train some dogs. If that's the case I just don't know why he don't just ask permission as long as it isn't during the season I wouldn't mine and would ease my mind about them tearing up my camp.
Any ideas on how to stop this without having an anger tresspasser on my hands? I have more too lose than him.

IF YOU DON'T ALREADY HAVE THEM, POSTED SIGNS. OR, MAYBE TRY SETTING UP A GAME CAMERA THAT WOULD CATCH THEM AND THEN YOU HAVE PROOF OF TRESPASSERS.

A gate is not a deterrent for hard headed tresspassers. They often jerk the gate down with a chain, steal the hardware and then you are back to square one. I suggest if not banned in your area that you set heavy railroad tie size post in about 2 foot of concerete and then find you 1 or 2 heavy steel cables to run between the post. They can't cut the cables and the post are well set in the ground. Be sure to mark the cable well so that everyon can see it so there are no mistake about it being there. Until we did this they jerked everything else down. IF you have any access roads you don't use cut a large scrap tree across it.

| You have to get on their case and stay on it. Don't threaten them, prosecute them. They will eventually get the message and move on. Unfortuneately, there is no easy way. |

Agree that holding a cuss-fest with firearms will probably not get the results you're looking for. However, persistence has paid-off for our smallish group - most casual / road-riding trespassers that like to stop and pop we have had pretty good success with by keeping cabled entrances locked, and by having either one of us or neighbors that we know take a ride around the public gravel roads adjacent to our land. Most of the people we encounter are not going to stomp a long way into gated property to shoot something they may have no way to get out without leaving torn-down gates or tracks that are fairly distinct. We normally leave our transportation in clear view (without valuables attached or inside a vehicle) so people know we are there. Has gotten better the last few years (with the exception of some bad instances in dog running season).

Gates & Signs help keep the honest man out. Calling your Sheriff or Game Warden, then following THRU with prosecution, is the only way to keep hard-core trespassers out !

Even if you use a steel cable, couldn't they just cut the lock. I've always heard a gate will only keep and honest person out. |

Don't buy a cheap lock. Buy one that is difficult to get the bolt cutter on it. Also make sure it is hardened steel.

How to keep out tresspassers 101
- Randomely placed landmines - .50 cal machine gun set up to a motion detector (you might kill that one huge evasive buck too) - scarecrow dressed up as your mother-in-law before she's had her 3rd cup of coffee or her morning shave.

| I had a shooting house pulled down to the ground at one of my clubs! We have not put up any gates yet because we feel they will jerk them down too. I will be putting a 2 by 12 board with about 100 twenty penny nails driven in across the entrance, buring it just enough to hide it but exposed enough to really ruin there night. I will also be putting a camera out and will keep it out at the site to collect evidence. I supspect this will stop alot of the tresspassing and vandelism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Trust me many of these thoughts crossed my mine along with some that could really ruin their day. The problem is that they live close by and I live far away. They have a much bigger advantage over me and don't have as much to lose. If I start a war they will just burn down my camp I worked so hard on. Got a camera up right now and once I get their liscense plate number and have my cousin run it, then the war is on. Until then I don't know who they are, so it's like fighting a ghost. For now I'm going to try a gate and hopefully when I get back up there I'll have some pictures. |

Any of you ever wonder if all the hassle that goes along with hunting is really worth it? I have, but I quickly erase that thought. |

Ok careful now. Them buried twenty penny nails will likely just irrate a man that does not think rationally anyway. Yes they deserve the inconvience but not only might they burn your camp down they might burn your land especially in this dry season. I once saw a sign in a restuarant asking for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons who had killed a womans father, burned down his hunting cabin and stole the tractor that was onsite. Not this obiviously is a extreme situation and I do not not if this man had done anything to provoke those that were involved in his death. You better off if you can just get one of those people close by that you build a trust with to be your eyes and ears. We had our problems with camp vandalism unit we made friend with those closest to our place. We always stopped by on our way in a dropped off a little something such as a cake and at Christmas time something small. We also made sure they got some venison and invited them occassionally to camp parties. You can bet anytime they saw anything suspicious going on they rang our cell phones and even found the person in possession of a 4 wheeler that had previously been stolen from us which we were able to retrieve after having the perpretrator arrested. I understand this may not be easy to find someone closeby they will look out for your interest but if it can be done it is a good thing.

| My mini 14 with a 60 round clip is the best trespasser deterrent I have ever used. Three trespassers/headlighters peed in their pants two years ago when they were dragging a deer to their truck. |

I would also talk to the Sheriff Department and your local Game Warden. I would suggest trying to make contact with some of the local people near your camp and see if you can get them to help you out by watch your property while you are not there. I might even put the word out that you have the description of the truck but you are just waiting to get the tag number before you prosecute.

I would be extermely careful...I know a fellow in Alabama who did this to stop some trespassers who were tearing up his roads mud riding at night...the fellas sued him and the judge made him buy each of the 3 trespassers new sets of mud tires...cost him a pile of cash...
It was a ridiculous verdict on the case...but you never know...judge said he should have had signs warning of the potential of tire damage
