I would think now would be prime time in attala. Had my best hunt in a long time on the morning of the 23rd in neighboring holmes.
Saw two mature bucks making stupid mistakes in one morning. One was rubbing a tree at eight oclock in the A.M. in an open cutover.
He was with a doe. No chasing which I think means she was "giving it up". Saw a different buck same morning, same time wandering aimlessly through
an open hardwoods patch that is in sight of my setup. He would bed down in the wide open hardwoods to catch his breath, get up, move some more, rub, etc... he took off and about five minutes later could hear him sparring with another buck. If I had to pick a ten day period it would be Dec 20 to the 30th, for that area.
I do believe there is a map a few knowledgable biologists compiled that is on this website. It gives average peak breeding dates.

Happyhollow is just off Hwy.14 west. It's on about 11,000 acres of International paper company land. Hunted there for about 25 years until they decided to lease the land. Started out paying about 5.00 per year to hunt. The last permit I bought was 50.00. Still a bargain. I think it was leased for about 4.00 an acre. Those guys get like 650.00 a year to hunt now.

Small World. I killed my first buck in 1969 about 1/2 mile up Hwy. 14 from Happy Hollow Road right past "Big Boy's Store". My grandfathers place was on Hwy. 14 at the Winston/Attala county line. IP land bordered his and I hunted on those $5.00 permits for years and also hunted in Lobutcha Hunting Club for many years. Matter of fact, my mother graduated from the old Lobutcha School in 1945. I graduated in 1973 also, although not in Ethel, in Jackson.

RLA55, would that be the Edwards or Shumaker place? The Shumakers were my aunt & uncle. My mom was raised on the county line behind the Edwards place.

Yep, you never know who you might run up on. We hunt on Neal Ray rode now. Just past Elton Ray place & take a left. Only about 130 acres, but there's only 4 or 5 of us.
