Poll Question:
I'm relieved to report that there were no reported hunting accidents in District 2A (Tate, DeSoto, Tunica and Quitman counties) this past hunting season. That is one part of the job I was dreading as I was appointed one of two hunting accident investigators for my sub-district.
So here's my question. How often, if at all, do you wear your safety belt while hunting from your stand?

If you don't use one, please explain if you would like. I realize some situations you may not need one, like if you hunt from a box or tripod stand or you have wings or...
Really, I tried to be diverse but couldn't cover every scenario. I'm just trying to see what situations are causing folks not to wear one.

I no longer use a climbing stand since I got in a bind in one a couple of years ago. I had my safety harness on and when I used a climbing stand I always used one when climbing, sitting and coming back down. It was on my way down that I got in a bind. The Lord took care of me that evening and I am grateful, but I am through with the climbers. I use a harness when I hunt from ladder stands, but I do not have anything I can use while climbing up the ladder. I generally climb up and hook to my tether (which is always left on the tree throughout the season. I take them down at the end of season and repair or replace before next season.) I am very particular about my ladder stands and they are put up right with even more racheting straps than called for, I can tell you they are there till I get ready to move them or a tornado comes through, in which case, I would have to find the tree in order to find my ladder stand.
LORD, help me to remember it's YOUR creation, not mine... |

| I've gotten away from using mine like I should but know first hand what can happen. In 1990 I was getting ready to get down from bowhunting one morning and with bow in hand and turned facing the tree the platform gave way and I feel backwards 20' flat of my back. It knocked the breath out of me and when I gathered my scences and realized what had happened my legs where shaking uncontrollably and I thought I was parralized. After lying there for a minute I was able to get up, had to cross the creek on a log, climb a hill, and walk about 1/4 mile to truck. When I got to the emergency room at Forrest General and they saw I had camo on they said, fell out a tree didn't you. Anyway I fractured L2 and L3 but the thing that hurt most was my chest from hitting flat and pulling the muscles. I'm glad that I landed flat though because if I had of landed on my butt I would have at least been crippled. One thing I definetly do everytime I go in the woods is let my wife know exactly where I'm gonna be and call her as soon as I get down. |

I've posted this pic before.. but here it is again.. I feel VERY strongly about wearing saftey harnesses. I used to just go into the woods, find a tree I could climb, and just sit on a limb.. Never wore a saftey harness. Then I moved on to climbing stands.. Still never used a saftey harness. Luck ran out on me.. I fell & broke both bones in my leg and broke my ankle in 7 places, and now I have this in my leg/foot:

Folks.. dont think it cant happen to you. I'll tell you from experience, its no fun with hardware in your leg, especially when the weather changes :) . How you you like to NEVER be able to run without a "gimp" again ?? I know there are a lot worse cases out there, and I'm very thankfull I didnt mess up more than I did.

| Well i'm one of them that rarely uses it. For one (and this is no excuse) i don't think you need to get 30 ft up in a tree to kill a deer. I hunt about 15 to 20 feet (which is still enough to hurt or kill you.) Second I don't hunt in rickidy. If its wood it better be about 10 ft off the ground and attached with 4 poles. No wooden stands. I have used an ole man tree stand for about 10 yrs now and can't imagine a senario where i would need a harness. The only time i use a harness is if i am hunting out of a lock on stand (which i rarely do.) I should probably use one all the time but i don't. I'm a pretty carefull person so if I even think that i might find myself in a situation where i would need a harness then I probably need to find another stand to sit in. |

I feel everyone that hunts from a climbing stand should use one if you are more than 15' from the ground. A fall from a lesser distance could break a bone, but definitely from 15' or higher could maim or kill you. I don't feel that it is worth the risk taken.

GTK, if that pic won't convince folks to wear one, they probably won't wear one.
LOOK AT THOSE SELF-TAPPING SCREWS!
Interesting to see that roughly 1/3 of all who have voted don't even wear one. I've got a tape I show at my Hunter Safety classes. I feel that if I had more hard evidence like your X-ray or maybe somebody in person that has been injured in a fall, I'd make more of a point.

I don't use one in my ladder stand because it has armrest rails and a shooting rail in front. You can't fall out of it but you can sleep in it.
I do use one when using a climbing stand or lock-on stand with a stick ladder. But I only use it after I get in the stand, not while climbing. |

I use one sometimes, it just depends on where I am and what stand I'm using.

Guys, for those of you who do not use a harness while climbing and coming down a tree I want to tell you something. That is most likely when you are gonna have a problem. Mine happened when the base of my Ol Man climber slipped off my boots and fell down the trunk of the tree. I had forgotten to adjust the length of the strap and it fell about 12 feet. I was about 30 ft. up a tree and it was dark thirty. I was sitting on the bar of the upper part of my stand and was able after much doing to get the base back up the tree where my boots could place it back on the tree. Had I not had my harness on, I might have fallen out when the base slipped. I was very fortunate. I ended up dislocating my pelvic bone and it took 2 1/2 months of Chiropratic care to get me back to normal. But now it only takes a wrong bend and it goes out again. So, what I am trying to say is, use a harness even when you are climbing/coming down the tree. It might take a little longer to stop every few times and raise/lower the tether strap, but it might save you in the long run.
I also had a friend that fell and broke both his legs while climbing with his climbing stand and not wearing a harness. The blade broke on the top of his stand and caused him to fall. He tried to catch the bottom but it just sent him twisting even worse than at first. He is better now, but he never climbs without his harness being attached to the tree.

I know of two people who have broken their backs from falling out of a stand. It may have saved my friends life this year when his lock on malfunctioned at 50 feet in a tree. Luckily he still had his spurs on and climbed down. I use a full body harness with an attachment which allows me to strap on to the tree while I am spurring. Much like the lineman use. Cost around $60 bucks. Well worth the investment and time.
Maybe you shouldn't have taken the first shot if you had to shoot mone than once. Make that first one count. |

I was hunting out of one of my buddies stands when I fell this bow season I was only about 15ft. I was lucky that I wasn't hurt all it did was scare the mess out of me. I always have worn a harnest but that day mine was left on my stand and I was in a hurry so when I got to my buddy's stand I just climbed up in it, but never again will I climb in a climbing stand without a harness and I suggest that all of you do the same. I am only 21 years old and that stubid mistake could have killed me or kept me from hunting or fishing for the rest of my life.

GTK,
I have the same looking hardware in my leg and knee.
I can't live in Mississippi at this time but my heart and soul will always cherish the times I can spend there. |

| Never use a climber without one, don't use one in a leaner. Safety is a big factor for me and I don't mind connecting the harness once I have made the climb. I feel it is the smart thing to do. |
