As a paramedic I have seen two people with broke backs from falls. Both lived and can still walk. I have heard of worse. But my opinion is if you are laying flat on your back busted up you want go home with meat.

I am proud to say that before I leave the truck that my Harness is on and ready to go. It may look a little funny riding a 4-wheeler with it on, but to me and my family, safety is first and foremost. There would be nothing worse than having to sit at home or lookdown from above at all your hunting buddies enjoying the wild outdoors and you are not with them, because of a " stupid harness that you said I don't need that thing". Not Me I'm wearing mine all the time. Just put it on like your favorite hunting shirt and you will always have it even if you didn't plan to climb that hunt.

I've hunted all of my life and have never used a harness. Have had a couple of bad situations and still do not use one. I have been looking into it recently at the urge of family and friends and can not find one that is comfortable. Even though that would be better than a wheel chair or worse.

I use one all the time in my climber. I rigged up a Seat-o-the-Pants harness by replaceing the short 6 foot teather with a 30 foot length of rapelling rope. This allows me to stay attatched to the tree at all times. The harness is attatched to the teather with a "prusic" knot (only on the name brand harness, not the one supplied with summit stands) This knot is a one way slip knot untill pressure is applied to the top half. When pressure is applied, the knot will slip at a controled rate. Should I ever fall, After I regain my sense of composure, theoritically, I can safely slide to the ground on the 30 foot length of rope. Hope I never have to try it though.

Always wear one once I lock-down in my Old Man climber - but the ladder stands I hunt from have shooting rail and or arms - (all metal no wood). I don't climb with my harness on - primarily because I usually carry my warmer clothes instead of wearing them in (sweat too much walking/climbing). Nothing worse that getting settled in and get the shivers from the sweat-soaked long handles. And the harness is a pain to climb with. If they ever make a upper-body harness that would attach above the climbing aid and move upward (maybe by partially attaching to the stand) without having to adjust them all the way by hand, I'm there.

I don't use one. I hunt out of a Brett Hunt Trophy Whitetail Climber. You face the tree at all times with this stand and if you climb correctly and tether your foot piece to the seat it's virtually impossible to fall out or have a problem. Name has changed to "Elusive Whitetail", but it's the same stand. Stand is made in South Carolina. Also, your gun fits perfectly across the arm rails so you can easily climb the stand with the gun (unloaded of course).

I don't really use stands... I'm sure I would use a belt while I was climbing and sitting. If I had one... |

Years past I have never used a harness. Something came over me this year and I realized how scared of heights I really was. I wear one now...

I dont use one, but i know i should when hunting from the second storie of the house lol mostly just road hunt in this part of the country, or build nice stands with a 10x10 building on top, but some guys like them bigger, so they can get a bed in them, I realy couldnt bring my self to sit in a tree stand at 20 below zero with a stiff north wind, just to kill a deer, if it has stares and a furnace in it you shouldnt need a harness.

I will NOT climb a tree with out one. Last week I walked .3 mile with my climber on my back and about the time I made it to my tree, I realized that I forgot my Hunter Safety System Harness. Well - Guess what - YEP - walked back to the truck put on my vest and walked back. Saw 7 deer, a rabbit, and a bobcat that evening. Worth the walk. I like to climb way up there - 20-30 feet when possible. I attach my safety rope as soon as I set foot on my Viper X4 base unit before my first advance upward....

I hunt out of a box stand, that is on top of a scaffold which is anchored down with guide wires. Very Safe Setup!

i don't understand how a person can be tied and still use a climbing stand. Is this referring to being tied off to the climbing stand? This is a serious question, not a jab. please clarify.

I use lineman's spikes and a 6 lb lock-on so I've got a belt on at all times. I even added a second rope to my harness so that I'm always hooked up when going around limbs. Had a good friend who uses the same set-up fall from about 25 feet this season when a replacement rope broke. He'll be in a temporary brace for a while longer, but will be up and running by turkey season. He was truly blessed that his injuries were not life-threatening.
Want a good reason to always wear some sort of fall-restraint system? Just remember that someone is waiting for you to come home after a day in the woods. |

I know I should wear one but I do not. I always hunt from a climber but the one that came with my stand takes to long to untangle and put on. I just go up and down slow and safe.
