I hunted for years and never wore one. I was always within a few hundred yards of a friend or another family member(none of which even owned a harness). But in the past three seasons I am always hunting alone & I may be 3/4 to a mile from the truck. I always wear a harness after I get up the tree, but not while climing.

I will use one every time i go except in a box stand. My cousin fell two years ago and is lucky he can walk today. He fell from a 12 foot ladder stand. I think it should be a state law that a safety harness be worn when hunting from any stand that is not fully enclosed.
My girlfriend said she'd leave me if I went hunting today, I'm gonna miss her. |

I don't use one cause I don't care if I break my neck! Heck Yeah I use one, thought everyone climbing 15-20 foot into a tree did. I sure don't want to fall out of a tree with a loaded .270 in my hands. |

Harnesses that come with the stands are simply to small and a lineman's harness is rather pricey.
A gun, a knife, and a handkerchief; things a guy just needs, man!! |

| I think that if you are careful about what you are doing and always use pull up ropes you dont really need a harness |

| I had the platform of a lock-on break out from under me last August. I was hooking up my safety harness to the tree when the bottom fell out. Only fell 14 feet or so, and managed to break two bones in my hand and screwed up my shoulder (which required surgery two weeks later), along with a bunch of cuts (about 20 total stitches) and numerous bruises. Now I have the harness that is attached to the tree from the moment you start to climb.....You don't have to fall very far to get hurt, believe me. You owe it to yourself and especially your family to wear a harness. |

| I mainly hunt out of a climber and I have heard of to many horror stories of people falling. Besides being in the climber is the best sleep I get... |

| Never climb without one. Seen too many fall accidents, both hunting, domestic and industrial. Know one guy killed from a fall and one partially disabled. Please think about the consequences. If you are not worried about yourself, think about your wife, kids or parents. It is not a big hassle considering the risk. If you don't like the harness that comes with most tree systems, then spend the $100 or so to get a comfortable vest (like Hunter Safety Systems). |

I use one in all treestands -- many years ago I took a couple of falls with no injuries - like the 3 legged dog and the highway - I finally got the message.

| All I hunt out of is my spikes with a loc-on on my back.I spike up the tree when I get to where I am going I take the loc-on off my back and put it on the tree and all I use is a linemans belt, but no harness or safey belt. |

I am the president of our camp and have made it a rule that anyone not hunting in a box or in a ladder 6' or below must wear a harness. No since in risking it. With that said, I only attach mine when I get to the top. My belt will not slide up and down the tree.
I feel I'm surrounded by crazy people! |

I do not use one: i feel more comfortable without them. I would rather rely on my own skills than try to "engineer" my hazards out. I hunt loc-on's mostly and they are so high, you are too alert to go to sleep or let go. I will not put a climber on a hardwood tree. Hope this helps the poll response. I am not up for any arguments, so lets keep this part of the forum as informative only. Thanks,

Guys, for those of you who do not use a harness while climbing and coming down a tree I want to tell you something. That is most likely when you are gonna have a problem. Mine happened when the base of my Ol Man climber slipped off my boots and fell down the trunk of the tree. I had forgotten to adjust the length of the strap and it fell about 12 feet. I was about 30 ft. up a tree and it was dark thirty. I was sitting on the bar of the upper part of my stand and was able after much doing to get the base back up the tree where my boots could place it back on the tree. Had I not had my harness on, I might have fallen out when the base slipped. I was very fortunate. I ended up dislocating my pelvic bone and it took 2 1/2 months of Chiropratic care to get me back to normal. But now it only takes a wrong bend and it goes out again. So, what I am trying to say is, use a harness even when you are climbing/coming down the tree. It might take a little longer to stop every few times and raise/lower the tether strap, but it might save you in the long run.
I also had a friend that fell and broke both his legs while climbing with his climbing stand and not wearing a harness. The blade broke on the top of his stand and caused him to fall. He tried to catch the bottom but it just sent him twisting even worse than at first. He is better now, but he never climbs without his harness being attached to the tree.
LORD, help me to remember it's YOUR creation, not mine...
I borrowed an Old Man once (and a harness-glad I used it). I decided real fast that it can make an Old Man out of a young man. Thing was too floppy with those swivelling sides. Lean to the side and you are sure to fall or drop the bottom half. I love trees, but I want a sturdy stand with big spikes. Seriously though, I haven't deer hunted in a few years. My climbing stand faces the tree, and is very stable and comfortable. I've had many good naps in it. We have some ladder stands that are not as safe. I used a lap belt of some sort in them to keep from falling forward.

I use one when sitting in ANY elevated platform stand whether climbing or not.
Climbing up and down is the time when you get tangled up and CAUSE a fall.
