Landowners along Mississippi's best remaining natural streams and rivers are encouraged to create and participate in voluntary stewardship plans to conserve important stream and bank habitiat. A non-binding agreement to use Best Management Practices (BMPs) when harvesting timber along streams is basic to a landowner's participation in a plan. Coordinated voluntary, private conservation efforts can provide a connected patchwork of protective buffer zones along the length of a stream. This non-regulatory program gives landowners an opportunity to take an active role in the future of their streams and the valuable fishery and wildlife resources they sustain.
