Deer Hunting Applications Available for Canemount WMA
JACKSON - Canemount Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is composed of approximately 3,500 acres located in the Loess Bluffs of Claiborne County near the Mississippi River. These hills have very deep and fertile top soil with a very high component of cherrybark oak in the timber stands. The Canemount property has a long history of trophy deer management. Hunting Canemount WMA will be a totally unique hunting experience compared to other WMAs. Hunters looking for a truly special hunting opportunity with a high chance of seeing and harvesting game should look no further than Canemount WMA.
During the 2014 - 2015 hunting season, deer hunting opportunities will be available through a draw hunt system open only to Mississippi residents 16 years of age or older. There will be 12, 3-day archery hunts available from October 3 - November 12; and 18, 3-day primitive weapons hunts available from November 14 - January 14. Twelve hunters will be selected for each 3-day hunt and randomly assigned to one of six designated hunt units. Only two hunters will be assigned to each hunt unit per hunt.
Hunters may apply for hunts at www.mdwfp.com/draw from August 15 - September 5. Applicants must have a valid Mississippi hunting license to apply for hunts. All hunters who are randomly selected to hunt are required to pay a $300 permit fee, and full payment must be made by September 17. Hunters that do not complete full payment by September 17 will forfeit their permit and a second drawing will be held. Hunting permits are non-refundable and non-transferable.
