Excellent Turkey Hunting on North Mississippi Wildlife Management Areas
JACKSON - Magnolia State turkey hunters are fortunate to have a wealth of excellent public land turkey hunting opportunities on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in North Mississippi. Hunters that wish to hunt on WMAs are urged to check the area-specific regulations before going afield. Season dates and bag limits on some WMAs may differ from the statewide framework. "The hunting can be very good on some of these WMAs during the middle and latter portions of the season when hunting pressure tends to be lower," noted MDWFP Wild Turkey Program Biologist Adam Butler.
The spring turkey season runs through May 1 on most areas. Bag limits for the spring season are one adult gobbler or gobbler with at least a 6 inch beard per day, three per spring season. Youth hunters ages 15 and under may harvest one gobbler of choice per day, three per spring season. In addition to any required hunting license, purchase of a WMA User Permit is required prior to hunting on any WMA. Everyone is required to complete a Daily Visitor Use card during each WMA visit. Cards are available at WMA visitor permit stations, and information attained from cards allows the MDWFP to make informed decisions about the management of WMAs.
