Winter Water for Wildlife Project Application Period Extended
JACKSON - The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP), Wildlife Mississippi, and other partners are pleased to announce the application period for the Winter Water for Wildlife project has been extended until June 20 due to abnormally wet planting conditions this spring. "Due to late planting, many farmers were worried they would not have crops harvested in time to meet the required flood dates. We re-evaluated our goals and decided to shorten the flooding period to allow more participations, while still providing important habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds," said John Gruchy, MDWFP Habitat Program Coordinator.
The new requirements for participation in the program for cropland are to place boards in water control structures by September 30 to initiate flooding from rainwater and pumping to initiate flooding beginning no later than October 31. Landowners must submit an application for project consideration; all applications will be competitively ranked based on potential habitat benefits.
