JACKSON - Deer season is only a couple months away. Hunters are beginning to get deer hunting fever as they plan their hunts.  Trim Cane Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is primarily managed for waterfowl hunting; however there are some unique deer hunting opportunities for youth and handicapped hunters. The WMA is an 891-acre tract located about four miles north of Starkville in Oktibbeha County.  Outside of the waterfowl impoundments, habitat on Trim Cane is managed primarily in an early successional stage which provides excellent deer habitat. 

 

Due to the small size of the WMA, deer hunting is restricted to youth hunters and wheelchair bound hunters. There are four wheelchair-accessible shooting houses placed on openings across the WMA.  Hunting is limited to Saturday afternoons in December and January. There will be two youth hunters and two handicap hunters drawn per day.  Hunters are selected by a random computer drawing. 

 

The bag limit is the same as statewide bag limits.  Legal bucks are those with an inside spread of at least 10 inches or one main beam length of at least 13 inches.  However, for hunters less than 16 years of age, any antlered buck is a legal buck.
