MDWFP to Assist with Longleaf Pine Field Day in Jones County
Jackson - Private landowners interested in learning more about longleaf pine should attend a field day at Jones County Junior College on Tuesday, October 30th, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The field day is presented by MDWFP, National Wild Turkey Federation, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Mississippi State Extension Service, Mississippi Forestry Commission, Jones County Junior College, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Topics will include management of longleaf pine, economic and wildlife benefits, availability of cost share programs; the day will also include field tours to sites in Jones County.
Longleaf pine is native to the southern half of Mississippi, and may be an attractive option for many landowners due to its disease and pest resistance, ability to withstand storms and high winds, and high-quality wood. Additionally, the open canopy conditions of longleaf stands, paired with its conduciveness with frequent prescribed burning make it an excellent choice for landowners interested in wildlife and aesthetic values. "Well-managed longleaf stands provide quality habitat for wildlife such as bobwhite quail, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and many nongame animals. Couple this with the specialty lumber products longleaf provides, and the current availability of cost-share programs for establishment, and longleaf becomes a very smart investment for many landowners," said Tamara Campbell, Longleaf Delivery Specialist for the MDWFP Private Lands Habitat Program.
Everyone who is interested in learning more about longleaf pine is encouraged to attend; however, participants are asked to register prior to October 22nd. A $5.00 registration fee is required and will cover the cost of transportation to field sites and lunch. To register, contact the MSU Extension Service office in Jones County at 601-428-5201 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
