Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) Community Fishing Assistance Program (CFAP) joined with the City of Eupora to make improvements to White’s Creek Lake in 2019, and local anglers are reaping the benefits.
The City of Eupora enrolled White’s Creek Lake in CFAP in 2017 and repaired a boat ramp and erected new signs. The city, local volunteers, and MDWFP fisheries biologists placed about two dozen large red cedar fish shelters throughout the lake.
Additionally, MDWFP hatcheries stocked several fish species in the lake over the past two years. Approximately 120,000 redear sunfish, 11,500 hybrid striped bass, and 10,500 channel catfish were stocked to bolster fish populations available to anglers. Also, 260 triploid grass carp were stocked to control aquatic plants in the lake.
MDWFP fisheries biologists, working with local anglers, have learned the following about the lake:
- A recent angler survey revealed almost 60% of the total harvest was bream and crappie
- Largemouth bass anglers released 98% of their catch
- A 12.25-pound largemouth bass was caught last year, and, more recently, several 10- to 12-inch hybrid striped bass were reported (creel limit on hybrids are six per day and must be more than 15 inches long for legal harvest).
Bream, bass, crappie, and catfish were all found during a routine population check performed by MDWFP, with bluegill measuring up to 6 inches and redear sunfish up to 8 inches in length. The crappie population included fish up to 2 pounds and largemouth bass up to 19 inches in length.
