The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science biological collections originated in 1935, and currently consist of over 500,000 specimens, representing the largest single reference for Mississippi vertebrate animals and freshwater mussels in existence. These specimens have been collected by agency personnel and other scientists as part of studies documenting the diversity, geographic distribution, ecology, and conservation status of native plants and animals in Mississippi. Today, these specimens and specimen related data are still used to provide biological information and technical services to resource managers, conservation biologists, and educators. |
