NOTE: The Mississippi Natural Heritage Program (MNHP) database tracks plants, animals, communities, and natural areas of importance to preserving Mississippi's natural heritage. In addition, MNHP maintains a list of "state protected species". This list is for the purpose of enforcement of Miss. Code Ann. §§49-5-101 et seq. In summary, this code states that it shall be unlawful for any person to take, possess, transport, export, process, sell or offer for sale or ship, and for any common or contract carrier knowingly to transport or receive for shipment any species or subspecies of wildlife appearing on the list of wildlife indigenous to the state determined to be endangered within the state, in addition to other lists as noted in the State Code.
This list is not to be used synonymously with the United States' List of Endangered Native Fish and Wildlife with regard to the protections and required actions provided under the United States Endangered Species Act - 7 U.S.C. 136; 16 U.S.C. 460 et seq. (1973). If one is seeking the most up to date list of species in Mississippi that are protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act and the related protections and requirements afforded by the Federal Endangered Species Act, they should contact the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
