Fossil enthusiasts are invited to pack up their fossil discoveries and head to MDWFP’s Mississippi Museum of Natural Science (MMNS) for the 17th Annual Fossil Road Show on Saturday, March 7, 2020, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Visitors will get expert opinions about the ages and identities of their rock and fossil discoveries from our scientists and other knowledgeable folks on hand. “Go through your rock boxes and challenge us with your prehistoric oddities,” says George Phillips, paleontology curator. Who knows what might turn up?

Fossil Collection: In addition to getting their fossils identified, visitors can also explore the museum’s fossil collection. Highlights include the teeth of some of the largest shark species that ever lived, a giant ground sloth, an articulated fossil horse foot, fossil corals, seashells, sand dollars, squid-like ammonites, and various other extinct organisms that once lived in Mississippi.

Fossil Education: Visitors will be updated on current paleontological research & news from the Mississippi Office of Geology and the MMNS Paleontology Program and can explore collector displays at school, agency, and organizational tables.

Fossil Art: Artist Sam Beibers will demonstrate his still-life techniques with paleo-subjects. Visitors can make their own fossil-inspired art, with ammonites as our fossil models, while getting painting tips.

Fossil Fun: Younger visitors can dig for fossils and participate in a fossil scavenger hunt! Fantastic Face Paint will be on hand with creative dinosaur designs (cost of face painting is in addition to museum admission). Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi will earn the FRS patch.

The Fossil Road Show event is included in the regular museum admission fee of $6 for adults, $4 for youth ages 3-18, and $5 for senior citizens ages 60 and up. For details, visit www.mdwfp.com/museum or call 601-576-6000.

The museum is located at 2148 Riverside Drive in Jackson, Mississippi. Follow us online at: www.facebook.com/msnaturalscience, www.instagram.com/MSScienceMuseum, and www.twitter.com/MSScienceMuseum.
