ABOUT THE EVENT:

On April 8, Mississippi will experience an 89.6% eclipse of the sun.

Join Museum staff to see and enjoy this extraordinary solar event that won’t happen again in North America until 2044!

  • Eclipse glasses included with advance ticket
  • Eclipse activities led by NASA Astro Camp Specialists (Inflatable Planetarium and Sunspotter Solar Telescopes) and Museum staff
  • Pinhole viewer station with Belhaven University Math & STEM
  • Sun tracking with chalk (similar to documenting earliest eclipses, before photographs)
  • GLOBE Citizen Science App with the National Weather Service: Museum will be an observer and data recorder for NASA
  • Eclipse Soundscapes App Citizen Science (wildlife sounds to see how the eclipse affects wildlife)
  • See how s'mores were made with a home-made solar oven
  • T&J Concessions and Barbeque Shine food trucks will be on-site; Moon Pies will also be for sale (not included with ticket)
  • The eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m., will be at it’s maximum at 1:52 p.m., and will conclude by 3:11 p.m.
  • Arrive early because parking is limited
  • Advance tickets required for all ages. Not included with regular Museum admission, Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Foundation Membership, or the LeFleur Museum District Pass.
  • You will receive an email confirmation for your ticket purchase which you will show at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science gate to receive your eclipse glasses and enter the event.

We will hold this event rain or shine. Most activities can be brought indoors and the Museum’s roof is a clear glass dome so we will still see the results of the moon’s shadow passing over the sun. We will also livestream from NASA the eclipse view as seen from several locations along totality.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Check out this info from NASA about safely viewing the eclipse.
