OPERATE A GEM SLUICE!
The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Foundation (MMNSF) recently donated a new mining sluice to the Museum! The donation was made possible through funds raised from MMNSF Memberships. See more MMNSF projects here.
The LeFleur’s Mining Company Gem Sluice is a permanent water feature outside the Museum of Natural Science for guests to enjoy and use to sieve for gemstones and fossils.
Bags of sand packed full of goodies must first be purchased from the Dragonfly Gift Shop (or the front desk during renovations) and brought to the sluice where you can pour the sand into one of the panning trays. When you dip the tray into the sluice’s water, the stream will carry away all the sand and reveal the precious gemstones and fossils for you to bag up and bring home.
The process is dynamic and entertaining, calling to mind the labor of prospectors from periods like the California Gold Rush, and gives you a fantastic souvenir to remember your Museum trip!
Foundation support helps bring interactive exhibits and educational enhancements directly to museum visitors, transforming ideas into experiences that inspire curiosity and learning.
The Foundation’s donation of the sluice stands alongside other supported projects that enhance exhibits and visitor engagement, reinforcing a shared commitment to learning through exploration and play.
