Lecture Title: Connecting Children Through Nature: Programs at The Crosby Arboretum
Lecture Description: Discover how The Crosby Arboretum is helping children build meaningful connections with the natural world. Kathryn Jeffers will share an overview of the Arboretum’s educational programs, nature-based activities, and community initiatives that spark curiosity and environmental awareness in young learners. In particular, Jeffers is reviewing how cognition science helps students connect emotional and learning experiences through the Arboretum’s new therapeutic and sensory garden. Learn how hands-on experiences in nature support healthy development and inspire a lifelong appreciation for our local ecosystems.
Bio: Kathryn Jeffers is the new Education Coordinator of the Crosby Arboretum. A Gulfport native, she holds degrees in Biology and Psychology, a master’s degree in Science Education, and is a credentialed Therapeutic Horticulture Practitioner. Kathryn is an experienced curriculum developer across Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and has many years of classroom experience. She also previously served as lead environmental educator at a botanical garden.
Kathryn is delighted to return to her home state of Mississippi and is passionate about connecting people of all ages to the natural world in meaningful and inspirational ways.
